Exposure Risks and Potential Control Measures for a Fire Behavior Lab Training Structure: Part A—Fire Dynamics and Thermal Risk

Abstract National Fire Protection Association standard 1403 provides the fire service with guidance for conducting effective live training goal of minimizing health and safety hazards. The document guidelines materials to be included in fuel package, but has raised questions about use specific types wood products this purpose. In study, dynamics generated when utilizing five different Class A that have been historically employed as fuels [low density fiberboard, oriented strand board (OSB), pallets, particle board, plywood] a single compartment structure (Fire Behavior Lab) were characterized. focus was placed on understanding thermal visual environment created firefighters located at typical locations instructors (front rear structure) students (middle structure). pallet package required longest time transition through six ventilation cycles while OSB quickest. Additionally, most consistent demonstrated followed by plywood, fiberboard pallets resulted less repeatable flashover or rollover demonstration. highest peak heat fluxes lowest. severe exposures measured front instructor location. To control risks Lab structure, should orient themselves low possible observation area behind interior baffle possible. Considering high radiant location, providing local shield reducing can also reduce risk injury personal protective equipment damage. Overall, impact firefighters, varying affects consistency being presented firefighting students.
